# Toronto Basement Flooding in 2026: Why Sump Pumps Burn Out Faster Now | Sump Pump Toronto News

> What the crew saw on Toronto service calls this year: longer storm cycles, overworked plastic pumps and tile on sanitary lines, plus what to check before winter.

If it felt like your sump pump ran more this year than it used to, you are not imagining it. On service calls across Toronto in 2026, the crew kept finding the same thing: pumps that were fine on paper, but had simply run too long, too hot, for too many hours in a row. This is our end-of-season recap, published before freeze-up, with what we saw and what we would check now.

## Storms Are Lasting Longer, So Pumps Run Longer

A sump pump does not mind a short burst of rain. What wears it out is a storm that keeps feeding the pit for a day or two. Since the July 16, 2024 storm, when 97.8 mm fell at Pearson and the Don Valley Parkway flooded, the pattern we see on calls is longer, heavier rain events where a pump cycles every minute or two for 24 to 48 hours.

Every start heats the motor. Every short rest is not quite long enough to cool it. Do that hundreds of times in a day, then again the next week, and the weakest pumps give up. In most of the failures we pulled this year, the pump had not “suddenly” died. It had been running hot for a long time.

> **What a long storm does to a pump**
>
> More starts, more heat, less rest. A pump rated for normal duty can be pushed well past it in one weekend of steady rain.

## Plastic Pumps Are the First to Go

Most of the burned-out pumps we replaced were plastic. That is not a knock on every plastic pump. They are cheaper, they work fine in a pit that only runs a few times a week, and plenty of homes have them. But plastic housings hold heat, while cast iron pulls it away from the motor. In a long storm that difference decides whether the motor windings survive.

| Pump type | Typical life in a Toronto basement | How it handles long storms |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Plastic (thermoplastic) | About 5-7 years | Traps heat, more likely to trip or burn out |
| Cast iron, oil-filled | About 15-20 years | Sheds heat, built for repeated cycling |

If your pump is plastic and more than five years old, it is worth a look before winter. If it is over ten years old, of any material, plan to replace it on your schedule rather than the storm’s. Our

service swaps it in your existing pit, usually in a few hours.

## Weeping Tile on the Sanitary Line Makes Everything Worse

Here is the part that surprises people. In Toronto’s older neighbourhoods, City data counts more than 25,000 homes whose weeping tile still drains into the sanitary sewer. During a long storm, all of that groundwater lands in sewers built for sewage. The sewers fill, pressure rises, and floor drains back up across whole blocks.

It also hurts the homes that do have a sump. When the street’s sewer is surcharged, a home without a backwater valve can flood from below even while its pump is working perfectly. And homes with weeping tile on the sanitary line have no pump at all to fall back on. City rules under Toronto Municipal Code Chapter 681 require that tile be disconnected, and the

weeping tile disconnection

job redirects it to a sealed sump.

## Other Things We Kept Finding

A few other patterns showed up again and again on calls this year:

- **No battery backup.** The worst nights for rain are often the worst nights for power. A pump with no electricity is just a weight at the bottom of the pit.
- **Tired check valves.** A check valve that leaks lets water fall back into the pit, which means the pump runs again almost immediately. That short cycling adds heat.
- **Silted basins.** Gravel and silt at the bottom of the pit clog the intake and make the pump work harder.
- **Discharge lines with poor slope.** Water that sits in the line in fall becomes ice in February.

## Your Pre-Winter Sump Pump Checklist

Do this before the ground freezes. Most of it takes ten minutes.

1. **Flow test.** Pour a bucket of water slowly into the pit. The float should lift, the pump should start, and the water should drain quickly. Then it should shut off cleanly.
2. **Check valve.** Listen when the pump stops. A loud slam or water running back down into the pit means the valve needs attention.
3. **Discharge slope.** Walk outside and look at the outlet. Water should drain away from the house, not pool by the wall. Clear leaves and make sure nothing will hold water to freeze.
4. **Battery load test.** If you have a battery backup, test it. Unplug the primary and let the backup run, or book a load test. Batteries fade quietly.
5. **Alarm.** Press the test button on your high-water alarm or WiFi monitor.

If any step fails, or you would rather we do it, book a check. The free assessment includes a flow test.

## A Note on the City Subsidy

If a failed pump has you thinking about a new pit or a backwater valve, check the City of Toronto Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy before you start. It pays up to $500 for a sump pump and up to $1,750 with a backwater valve on eligible Toronto addresses. The packet needs a permit number, an inspection certificate and an itemized paid invoice, and we file it for our customers at no charge.

## What We Would Do Before Next Spring

If your pump is plastic and older than five years, switch to cast iron. If your basement is finished, add a battery backup with a WiFi alarm. If your floor drain gurgles in storms, have the drain scoped to see where your weeping tile goes. None of these are glamorous. But they are the difference between a dry March and a call to our emergency line at 2 a.m.
