# Sump Pump Installation in Etobicoke: Lakeshore and Creek-Side Homes

Last updated: October 7, 2026

Sump Pump Installation Toronto installs sump pumps, battery backups and sump + backwater valve combos across Etobicoke, from Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch on the lake to Islington, The Kingsway and Rexdale. Lakefront and creek-side homes here can see a high water table after long rain events, so we size the pit and pump to real inflow and plan a discharge route that keeps working in winter. A licensed Master Plumber pulls the permit, installs to Ontario Plumbing Code Part 7 and files the City of Toronto subsidy for eligible addresses.

## High Water Near the Lake in Etobicoke? What We See Most

The Local Problem

### Lakeshore basements that flood when the creek and the lake are both high

**What you see:** Water seeps along the back wall after a long rain, and the old pit fills faster than the pump can empty it.

**Why it happens here:** Homes near Mimico Creek and Etobicoke Creek sit on low ground beside a lake that set a record 76.03 m in 2019, so groundwater has nowhere to go.

**What we do:** We flow-test the pit, fit a deeper sealed basin with a properly sized pump and add a backwater valve where the floor drain has backed up.

### Pump dies mid-storm

The float sticks or the motor burns out halfway through a long storm, and water starts rising in a finished basement.

### No backup in a blackout

Storms that flood basements often take the power too, and a pump with no electricity is no help.

### Paperwork nobody finished

No permit, no inspection, a lump-sum invoice: the reasons City subsidy claims and insurer renewals stall.

## Sump Systems for Lakeshore and Creek-Side Basements

Homes near the lake and along the Humber River and Mimico Creek see high groundwater after long rains, so pit depth, pump capacity and a dependable discharge route matter more than usual.

## How Much Does Sump Pump Installation Cost in Etobicoke?

We use our city-wide published ranges here. A new **interior sump pump installation** runs **$1,800 to $3,200 CAD**, with most Toronto jobs landing at $2,400 to $2,800 before the subsidy. Homes with a high water table near the lake or creeks are more likely to need a 24 gallon basin or a 1/2 HP high-flow pump, which sits toward the upper end.

A **battery backup** adds $900 to $2,200 to an existing pit, and a **sump + backwater valve combo** runs $5,500 to $9,500. On eligible Toronto addresses, the City subsidy can return up to $500 on a sump or $1,750 on a combo. We file it at no charge.

Local Knowledge

## Creeks, the Lake and a Long Flood History

Etobicoke has a long flood history. In 1954 Hurricane Hazel sent **Etobicoke Creek** through Long Branch and swept homes into the lake; **Marie Curtis Park** now sits where they stood. The creeks still rise fast, and the **Humber River** and **Mimico Creek** do the same after long rains.

The lakeshore is the other pressure point. Lake Ontario hit a record 76.03 m in 2019, and in the first half of 2015 the Etobicoke-Lakeshore ward logged more basement flooding reports than any other ward in the city. The City's flooding study for the Lake Shore Boulevard and Mimico Creek area now calls for a new 1500 mm storm sewer.

For homes in **Mimico**, **New Toronto** and **Long Branch**, that means a pit deep enough to catch water below the slab, a pump sized from a flow test and a discharge that keeps working in February.

What We Account For Here

### The Lake, the Humber and Mimico Creek

This side of the city is shaped by water. The **Humber River** runs along its eastern edge, **Mimico Creek** and **Etobicoke Creek** cut through it, and the south end sits on the lake. After long rain events, like the July 16, 2024 storm that dropped 97.8 mm at Pearson, right next door, groundwater rises and pits fill fast.

That makes three things more important than usual: **pit depth**, so water is caught below the slab; **pump capacity**, sized from a flow test rather than a guess; and a **dependable discharge route** with proper slope and a freeze-resistant outlet, so the line does not ice up in February.

Housing Stock

## Homes We Work On Most

**Lakefront homes in Mimico, New Toronto and Long Branch.** Close to the **Lake Ontario shoreline**, groundwater can sit high after long rains. These basements need pits deep enough to catch water before it reaches the slab, and pumps sized to keep up.

**Creek-side homes.** Streets near the **Humber River**, **Mimico Creek** and **Etobicoke Creek** see higher groundwater during spring thaw and big storms. A battery backup matters here, because the pit may run hard on exactly the nights the power goes out.

**The Kingsway and Islington.** Older, larger homes, often with finished basements and long discharge runs. We plan the discharge around landscaping and walkways so it drains away from the house without icing over a path.

**Rexdale.** A mix of bungalows and semis, including homes recovering from sewer backup claims that now need an insurer-ready install and paperwork.

Scheduling & Access

## Lakeshore to Rexdale: Scheduling and Access

Etobicoke runs from **Lake Shore Boulevard West** up through **Islington** and **Kipling** to **Rexdale** near Highway 27. We schedule lakeshore visits (Mimico, New Toronto, Long Branch) together and north-end visits (Rexdale, Islington) together, using the **Gardiner**, **QEW** and **Highway 427** to move between them. Non-emergency assessments are usually booked within **2 business days**, with 24/7 live answer for emergencies.

Lakefront streets can be tight for parking, especially in summer. We confirm parking and access at the assessment so install day runs on time. Drain permits are filed with Toronto Building, usually about 5 business days ahead, and inspections are normally completed the same week.

Straight Answers

## Etobicoke Sump Pump Questions

### Do lakeshore homes in Mimico or Long Branch need a bigger sump pump?

Not always bigger, but sized correctly. Homes near the lake and creeks often see faster inflow after long rains. We flow-test the pit and may recommend a 24 gallon basin or a 1/2 HP pump if the numbers call for it.

### Why does this part of the city flood so often?

In the first half of 2015, Ward 6 Etobicoke-Lakeshore logged 215 basement flooding reports, the most in Toronto. Low lakeshore ground, three creeks and older sewers all play a part.

### What is the City doing about flooding along Lake Shore Boulevard?

Basement Flooding Study Area 53 recommends a new 1500 mm storm sewer along Lake Shore Boulevard West near Mimico Creek. Until it is built, a sealed sump and backwater valve protect the house itself.

### What does a sump pump installation cost in Etobicoke?

Published ranges apply: $1,800-$3,200 CAD for a new interior install. Deep pits and high-flow pumps for lakeshore water tables sit toward the upper end.

### Should I add a battery backup near the Humber or Mimico Creek?

We recommend it. Creek-side pits can run hard during storms, and those storms often take out the power at the same time.

### How do you stop the discharge line from freezing?

We give the line enough slope to drain fully between cycles and finish with a freeze-resistant outlet aimed away from the house and walkways.

### Can you help after a sewer backup claim in Rexdale?

Yes. We install to Ontario Plumbing Code Part 7 and deliver one adjuster-ready PDF with the invoice, permit, CSA B64.10 certificate, flow test and photos.

### Do I need a backwater valve as well?

If the floor drain has ever backed up during a storm, it is worth discussing. A sump plus backwater valve combo runs $5,500-$9,500 CAD and can qualify for a larger City subsidy.

### Do you book north-end visits separately from the lakeshore?

Yes. Rexdale, Islington and The Kingsway visits are grouped along Highway 427, so assessments are usually booked within 2 business days. Live answer is available 24/7 for emergencies.

### Do you serve Mississauga homes across Etobicoke Creek?

Yes. The City of Toronto subsidy does not apply there, since Mississauga runs its own programs.
